Notification of Rights (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to the student’s education records. These rights are:

The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the school receives a request for access. Parents or eligible students should submit to the school principal (or appropriate school official) a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. The school official will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where records may be inspected.
The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate or misleading. Parents or eligible students may ask the school to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write to the school principal (or appropriate official), clearly identifying the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the school decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the school will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing.
the right to consent to disclosure of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception, which permits disclosure without consent, is disclosure to school officials with a legitimate educational interest. A school official is a person employed by the school as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with whom the school has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official commitee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her task. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.

Student Survey Participation

No student shall be required – as part of the school program of the District’s curriculum, without prior written consent of his/her parents, to submit to or participate in any survey, analysist or evaluation that reveals information concerning:

Political affiliations or beliefs of the student’s or his/her parents
Mental or psychological problems of the student or his/her family
Sexual behavior or attitudes
Illegal, anti-social or self-incriminating behavior
Critical appraisals of other individuals with whom respondents have close, family relationships
Legally recognized relationships such as those of lawyers, physicians, and ministers
Religious practices, affiliation or beliefs of the students or his/her parents
Income

Parents have the right to inspect, upon request, a survey or evaluation created by a third party before it is administered by the school to the student.

Pesticide Application Notification

The Easton Township School District #6 utilizes an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan intended to reduce the incidence of pest infestation while also reducing the need for chemical pesticide applications. As required by State of Michigan law, parents will receive advance notice regarding the non-emergency application of a pesticide, other than a bait or gel formulation, that is made to the school or day care grounds or buildings. This notice will be given 48 hours prior to the application by means of a posting at the main entrance of each building being treated and a posting inside the main lobby of each building being treated.

Asbestos Management Plan

The EastonTownship School District #6 has conducted an extensive asbestos survey of all of our buildings. Based on the findings of this inspection, a comprehensive management plan was drafted. This plan details the response actions the district will be taking regarding asbestos-containing materials found in our buildings.

McKinney-Vento Act (Homeless Coordinator)

Pursuant to the McKinney-Vento Act, children who are identified as meeting the Federal definition of “homeless” will be provided a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the same manner as all other students of the District. Homeless children and youth are defined as individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence or are living with friends/relatives due to loss of housing.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Federal law concerning the education of students with disabilities, requires schools to provide parents of a child with a disability with a notice containing a full explanation of the procedural safeguards available under the IDEA and U.S. Department of Education regulations.

The Board of Education recognizes its responsibility to maintain the public records of this District and to make such records available to residents of Michigan for inspection and reproduction. Bullying

It is the policy of the District to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all of its students. Appropriate behavior, treating others with civility and respect, and refusing to tolerate harassment or bullying is expected of students, as well as administrators, faculty, staff, visitors, and volunteers.
